OpenAlex assigns topics with a model trained on the modern corpus and applies it retroactively. Filtering to works published before 1986 therefore does not reconstruct the literature as it was organised in 1986 — it projects the 2026 classification backwards onto it. Any claim about what was knowable at a past date inherits this distortion.
